Song of the Ocean

A global virtual performance bringing scientists and singers together for World Ocean Day 2021

The Song of the Ocean was written to celebrate the ocean; it bridges science and art in the context of negotiations regarding future governance of the ocean. It was composed by Paul Mealor, known for his work for the wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton , with words written by internationally-acclaimed poet, Dr Grahame Davies, and informed by ocean experts Marcel Jaspars and Abbe Brown, professors of the University of Aberdeen and members of the Deep-Ocean Stewardship Initiative.

Jillian was delighted to be asked to sing the solo soprano part for the virtual performance

Ae spark o’ Nature’s fire: Songs of Robert Burns

Jillian’s debut solo album with pianist Catherine Herriott.

The album features arrangements by contemporary Scottish composers and includes the première recording of Paul Mealor’s Ae Fond Kiss which was written especially for Jillian.

Ae fond kiss – arr. Paul Mealor (b. 1975)

Ca’ the yowes to the knowes – arr. Rory Boyle (b. 1951)

Aye waukin’, O! – arr. John Maxwell Geddes (b. 1941-2017)

This album of Burns’s beautiful poetry set to music is sung superbly by Jillian Bain Christie. Her dedication to diction, expression and a deep understanding of the texts, born from her own heritage and heart, gives this recording insights that have never been given before. Any lover of Burns and of very fine singing needs to get this album!
